Four possibe functions for all behavior
All behaviors, appropriate or inappropriate serve of these functions. Identifying the function of problem behavior is necessary in figuring out which want or need the child is trying to obtain through problem behavior.
Access
When an individual engages in a behavior which in the past has provided access to an item or activity.
Example: In the grocery store, child reaches for a candy bar. Mom responds “No candy”. Child drops to the floor and begins to cry loudly. Mother says “Ok, just this time. If you stop crying you can pick only 1 candy.”
Escape/Avoid
When an individual engages in a behavior which in the past has allowed the individual to avoid/escape undesired things or events.
Example: Teacher hands out a worksheet to be completed. Child hides under the table. Teacher says, “you are going to the office if you do not get up….1,2,3. Okay I am calling the principal”. Child is then sent to the office where they sit, wait, talk to the principal and do not have to complete the assignments his class is working on.
