Parents:
Involve parents to build a partnership for student success.
• Communicate all rules and expectations to parents in written form
• Present rules in a scheduled parent meeting
• Use flexibility in scheduling meetings with parents
• Allow opportunities for parents to discuss and give feedback
• Begin conversations with parents using a positive focus
• Establish relationships with parents that promote active home and school partnerships
• Develop and build trust by keeping parents informed
• Share on‐going and positive feedback with parents (e.g., notes, phone calls, postcards)
• Provide each student with an assignment calendar or student planner or a behavior record
• Require parents to sign or initial the assignment calendar or student planner and behavior record
• Communicate regularly with parents (e.g., newsletter, calendar, web site, email, etc…)
• Remain calm and refrain from making the situation personal
• Adhere to confidentiality guidelines when talking with a parent
• Assign activities that involve parents
• Communicate and operate with an open door policy
• Hold a minimum of one parent‐teacher conference annually to keep parents informed and involved
• Use multiple means of informing parents of situations that need attention (e.g., notes, phone calls, etc…)
• Invite input from students and parents in setting behavior goals
• Invite parent to observe and participate in classroom activities
• Work with school site administration and organize parent training sessions to demonstrate parenting skills (e.g.,homework, time management, dealing with difficult behavior, etc…)
• Provide parents a resource list of reference materials, personnel and agencies that provide support and direction
• Collaboration with school personnel who are directly involved with the student to provide a support system for the student and parent
• Initiate parent/teacher/administrator conference when needed
• Provide recognition and encouragement to parents for being involved, showing interest or demonstrating support
